With the inauguration of the Foundation Beyeler, Hildy and Ernst Beyeler's art collection with exceptional works of Classical Modernism, Basel gained anothe cultural attraction worth seeing. The collection, composed of approx. 150 paintings and sculptures, documents a personal view of Classical Modernism, with extreme quality requirements. It includes late impressionist work of Cezanne, van Gogh and Monet; the transition to Cubism of Picasso and Braque, and representative groups of work by artists such as Miro, Mansse, Kandisky, Klee as well as works by American Expressionists Basebtz and Kiefer.
Museum Jean TinguelyThis museum is devoted to the life and work of this major sculptor in iron. Opened in October 1996, it is founded by F. Hoffmann-La Roche, AG. The permanent exhibition shows works from the artist's beginning in the fifties - with motor-driven reliefs, drawing machines and the scrap assemblages of the sixties - through the black-painted machine sculptures, to the large sculptures and pandemotic cycles of his last creative period.
