All to itself, Aix-en-Provence holds an exceptional patrimony for which it is worth stopping for a few days. It is also the ideal base for roaming the surrounding areas of Provence which, within a radius of a few kilometres, has the most beautiful of landscapes to offer: the Calanques (deep rocky inlet), the Camargue, the Luberon, the Haute Provence. Climbing up toward the Durance, the landscapes of the country of Gions, Chemin de la Lavande (the lavender road) between Velesole and Riez, chemin de faïenciers (the earthenware maker road) around the small village of Moustiers Ste Marie, Chemin des Gorges du Verdon (the road of the Gorges of the Verdon), where in one of the most beautiful canyons of the world run the jade-green waters of the Verdon. The circuit of villages and castles of the Luberon will lead you, amongst others, to the imposing ruins of the château de la Tour d'Algues, then toward that of the Lourmarin before reaching Apt, the capital of preserved fruits. Roussillon and its ochre quarries, Gordes, the villages des Bories (traditional constructions of dry stone), and the magic Abbey of Sénanque. All sites need to be discovered.
